In June 1938, Action Comics #1 debuted at newsstands and the
world got its first glimpse of a new type of hero -- a superhero. No one could've
predicted at the time the impact Superman would have, not only on the fledgling comic book industry, but on popular culture
To put things
in perspective, when Superman debuted Franklin Roosevelt was president, World War II was still three years away and comic
books cost one thin dime. Times and prices change obviously since a Superman comic costs about three bucks today, but Superman
remains. He's been the star of his own radio show, a movie serial, cartoons, three television series and five major motion
pictures. There has been no decade that has been without some popular media version of The Man of Steel.
This site will look back with a nostalgic eye on those 70 years
as part of an ongoing tribute to the first and the greatest superhero. We hope you enjoy the presentation.
